Two and half years ago, forward Dan Sexton scored the Stampede's third goal of the game to seal a 3-0 victory over Waterloo in the 2007 Clark Cup Championship game. Now his scoring goals in the NHL.
The Apple Valley, MN native made his NHL debut with the Anaheim Ducks last week and tallied his first two NHL goals last night for the Ducks who came from behind to defeat the Dallas Stars 4-3 in overtime.
Trailing 3-1, Sexton flipped home a feed from teammate Bobby Ryan to make it a 3-2 game. He tied the game and forced overtime with just over a minute left in regulation when he brought the puck up the right side and beat Stars goaltender Marty Turco on a bad angle shot. He finished the night with a game high nine shots on goal.
"Take my coolest previous feeling and multiple it by 10, if not more," Sexton told NHL.com after the game. "That is what it was. I thought we were due to score, but once it actually happens, you're in shock. To get another one after that, it just felt like a dream. It was unbelievable."
Sexton was named the game's number one star for his efforts. It was a big win for the Ducks (11-13-6) who snapped out of a five-game winless streak.
"Tonight he scored two big goals, and he probably doesn't realize how big they are for our hockey club," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle, adding that Sexton is "not big in stature, in size, but a huge heart."
Sexton spent the 2006-07 season with the Herd and was a big part of the Stampede's Clark Cup championship team. He recorded 24 points (14g, 10a) in 58 games during the regular season. He then helped the Herd capture their first ever Clark Cup posting nine points (8g, 1a) in eight playoff games, leading all USHL players with eight postseason goals.
Prior to joining the Ducks organization, Sexton spent two seasons playing collegiate hockey at Bowling Green State University.
Sexton and the Ducks return to action this Friday when they travel to Detroit to face the Red Wings.
The Stampede return to action tonight when they travel to Fargo to face the Force at 7:05 PM. As always, fans can listen on News Talk 1320 KELO-AM.
