 Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League

114 former QMJHL players pursuing their hockey careers at Canadian Universities

December 8, 2009 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release

BOUCHERVILLE, Tuesday, December 8, 2009 - A recent analysis of Canadian University rosters in Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces shows that 114 former players are currently pursuing their education and their hockey careers at the University level. To date, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has invested $347 700 in the form of study grants to 77 of these former student-athletes who forwarded a request to the League office and who were eligible for the study grant program as outlined in the QMJHL Education Policy.

Of note, nineteen additional players are benefiting from QMJHL study grants while pursuing their education at Canadian Universities outside the League's territory.

"We are seeing a growing tendency regarding the number of former players who are taking the next step and enrolling at Canadian Universities once their major junior careers completed," said Natacha Llorens, the QMJHL Education Advisor. "The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and its teams invest significant dollars to ensure the academic success of its current and former players. Teams are responsible for covering all school-related expenses during the player's major junior internship and, each year, more than one hundred (100) former athletes benefit from the League's generous study-grant program. Today, these grants can reach $20,000 over four years; an investment that will surpass $400,000 this year. Also, former players remain eligible regardless of the program in which they decide to enrol (technical, professional, university or other). The League has developed partnerships with high schools and with institutions such as Alliance Sport-Études, Cégep@distance and Collège Saint-Bernard to help facilitate and support players attending Cegep and Quebecers pursuing their education with a team outside of the Province. The hard work that has been done over the course of the past few years is netting results. The QMJHL is become a stepping stone for players who wish to pursue their education and hockey careers at Canadian Universities."
