New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - With record-setting support provided yet again by their loyal fans, the New Britain Rock Cats have much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. Connecticut's oldest continuously-operating professional sports enterprise not only established new franchise Attendance marks in 2009, but also - for the first time since American League MVP Joe Mauer wore a New Britain uniform six years ago - participated in the Eastern League Playoffs. What a year!
Everyone associated with the Rock Cats is humbled and deeply grateful for the enduring support provided to the team by families and fans all across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. As an expression of their appreciation, the Rock Cats will again be donating hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food items - along with ten complete turkey dinners - to local organizations and families who might otherwise go without during this Thanksgiving holiday.
This is the 10th consecutive year that the Rock Cats have made such donations to assist their neighbors in need.
The Rock Cats Foundation - the Club's charitable arm - recently hosted its 2009 World Series Party at New Britain Stadium. Rock Cats CEO Bill Dowling insisted that the October evening's "price of admission" be a non-perishable food item that could subsequently be donated to a family in need. Generous Rock Cats fans responded by bringing hundreds of pounds of valuable food stuffs to the annual postseason gala; all such items were subsequently provided to the New Britain-based Friendship Center, a non-profit that provides basic supports to those in need.
In addition, the Rock Cats are partnering this Thanksgiving with a number of local grocery outlets - Stew Leonard's, Trader Joe's, Big Y, and Grandma's Pies - to provide Thanksgiving Food Baskets to local families served by the Friendship Center's Outreach Program. Each Basket will contain a turkey, stuffing, and assorted other items necessary to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. The Thanksgiving Food Baskets will be delivered to ten local families by the Rock Cats' popular mascot, "Rocky", tomorrow (11/24) afternoon, starting at 1:00 PM. Once again coordinating this year's donations for the Rock Cats are Community Relations Director, Amy Helbling, and Marketing Coordinator, Lori Soltis. Each may be reached at (860) 224-8383.
