MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have announced two changes to the 2010 home schedule. Opening Day will now be moved up one day and take place on Thursday, May 20, as the Miners extend their opening series with River City to four games. Also the final three-game series will be moved up one day to avoid conflict with the first ever SIU football game at the new stadium on Thursday, Sept. 2.The four-game opening series was made possible by moving the originally scheduled June 14 matchup with River City to one day before the originally scheduled Opening Day. June 14 will now be an off day. The final Miners home series is now scheduled for Aug. 30 through Sept. 1.
"The Miners recognize the importance of opening a new stadium for the Salukis and have chosen to change the schedule to avoid having a game in Marion at the same time the new facility opens in Carbondale," Miners Vice President Erik Haag said. "Fans in Southern Illinois will now have the ability to attend both of these important sporting events in the region."
"When we realized that the inaugural football game in the new stadium was going to conflict with the last regular season game of the Miners, we worked with Erik and (Miners General Manager) Tim (Arseneau)," SIU Athletic Director Mario Moccia said. "And they were able to change the schedule at the last minute. Saluki Athletics sincerely appreciates the Miners efforts to ensure this historic football game will be able to be seen by the most individuals possible without having to choose between two conflicting events."
