MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have hired Billy Richards as the assistant general manager. He will oversee corporate sales for the upcoming 2010 season.
Richards has worked seven years in minor league baseball and has spent the last two seasons as the director of promotions for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York-Penn League. Prior to joining the Scrappers, he worked for three seasons for the South Bend Silver Hawks, single-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. In his first two years in South Bend he was an account executive before being promoted to the director of tickets and group sales in 2006.
While in South Bend, Richards worked with Miners Executive Vice President Erik Haag and General Manager Tim Arseneau.
"We are pleased to be able to add someone of Billy's background to our staff," Haag said. "He brings a wide variety of work experience in Minor League Baseball which will benefit him and us in his role as the team's Assistant General Manager."
Originally from New Castle, Pa., Richards graduated from Edinboro (Pa.) University.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to join the Miners organization," Richards said. "I look forward to becoming an active member of the Southern Illinois Community."
