Rome, GA - The Rome Braves announced today their partnership with the Floyd County Police Department to host the 1st Annual Braves Celebrity Shootout to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Rome. The day will consist of registration and driving range at 9:30am, a shotgun start at 11am, followed by an awards reception after the tournament. Food and drinks will be provided. The golf tournament will be held on Thursday November 12 at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome. Teams or individuals can register at the Floyd County Police Station or at the ticket office located at State Mutual Stadium, home of the Rome Braves. Hole and team sponorships are available as well. Former Rome Braves manager and current Myrtle Beach Pelicans' manager Rocket Wheeler will be the inaugural "Celebrity" for the shootout. Each participant will have an opportunity to play a Par 3 hole with the "Rocket." Rome Braves fans will remember Wheeler as the first Rome Braves manager (2003-2005). During the 2003 inaugural season, Wheeler led Rome to the South Atlantic League Championship with a 78-61 overall record and a second half division title en route to being named the Braves' Minor League Manager of the Year. Following the 2008 season, he garnered the prestigious honor of being named by Baseball America as the Minor League Manager of the Year as well as the Carolina League Manager of the Year after leading the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a franchise-record 89 regular season wins and first place finished in both halves of the season.
The tournament will also honor Rome City Police Chief Hubert Smith. Smith was the very first member of the Boys Club of Rome and has diligently served the Rome City Police Department over the past 44 years.
The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. They provide a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring adult professionals, life-enhancing programs and character development experiences, as well as hope and opportunity to many children in Rome and Floyd County. Former members of the Boys & Girls Club of Rome are being asked to participate in the tournament or to merely donate $5-10 to the proceeds in an effort to benefit this community asset.
