Amarista named Angels Player of the Year

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced their minor league organizational awards for the 2009 season, naming infielder Alexi Amarista as Player of the Year, and former Kernels Trevor Reckling and Peter Bourjos as Pitcher of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Angels' Director of Player Development, Abe Flores, made the announcement on Thursday.

Amarista, 20, spent the entire 2009 season at Cedar Rapids, winning the Midwest League batting title with a .319 average (152-477) with 84 runs scored, 39 doubles, 10 triples four home runs, 49 RBI and 38 stolen bases in 125 games. He was named as the starting second baseman of the West Squad in the MWL All-Star Game and was selected as the second baseman on the MWL Post-Season All-Star Team. He was chosen as the Angels' Defensive Player of the Month for April and Organizational Player of the Month for July. In three professional seasons, Amarista has a .326 (301-922) batting average.

Reckling, 20, split time between Rancho Cucamonga and Arkansas, and was named to the Texas League All-Star Game and Post-Season All-Star team. He played for the USA Team at the 2009 Futures Game and a member of the gold medal winning Team USA at the 2009 World Cup of Baseball. Reckling played for the Kernels in 2008.

Bourjos, 22, spent the entire 2009 season at Arkansas, compiling a .997 fielding percentage with 294 putouts and seven assists in 302 total chances, committing just one error and taking part in five double plays in 109 games. He led the Texas League with 14 triples and was selected to play in the Texas League All-Star Game. Bourjos played for the Kernels in 2007.

The Kernels open the 2010 MWL season on Thursday, April 8 against the Beloit Snappers at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The full scheduled will be released soon - check www.kernels.com for more information.
