Red Sox Take 2-0 Series Lead with 6-4 11th Inning Triumph

September 10, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Winston-Salem, NC (September 10, 2009) - Jon Hee lined an 0-2 offering from Tyson Corley down the right field line to plate Zach Borowiak and Che-Hsuan Lin in the top of the 11th, breaking a 4-4 tie and catapulting the Salem Red Sox to a 6-4 win and a 2-0 series lead over the Winston-Salem Dash. One night after Daisuke Matsuzaka spun six and two-thirds in a 7-2 game one victory, Kyle Weiland answered the call on the mound, tossing seven strong for the Red Sox. Salem also belted three homers in a game for the first time all season, as Brad Correll cracked a two-run bomb for the second straight playoff game and Che-Hsuan Lin and Chih-Hsien Chiang also jacked solo shots.

Winston-Salem took their first lead of the series with an unearned run off Weiland in the second, but Correll's multi-run blast leapfrogged Salem into the lead in the top of the fourth. Up 2-1, Lin's solo drive made it 3-1 in the top of the fifth, but Brent Morel drove in his third and fourth runs in the series with a two-run, two-out single off Weiland in the bottom of the frame. Still 3-all into the eighth, Chiang's mammoth home run put Salem back on top, but the Dash answered run back due to some alert base running from Justin Greene, who scored all the way from second on an infield single by Tyler Kuhn.

Both teams led off their tenth innings with doubles, but came up empty as the night continued into the 11th. Zach Borowiak's third hit of the night was a double to begin the top of the 11th, but he remained at second with two outs after Tim Federowicz grounded out and Ryan Dent struck out. With Lin batting, Borowiak advanced to third on a passed ball, and the Sox had two in scoring position after Lin walked and stole second. Jon Hee quickly fell behind in the count 0-2, but drilled a liner over the first-baseman's head to drive in the pair and and pave the road the victory.

Anthony Rizzo joined Borowiak and Chiang with three hits apiece, while Lin and Correll each went 2-5. Salem outhit Winston 14-10 as the Red Sox return home one win away from the championship series.

Weiland recorded 21 outs, 15 via ground balls as the righthander struck out four and only walked one in seven innings. Jason Blackey allowed a run in two-thirds of an inning, but Derrick Loop, Robert Coello, and Kyle Fernandes combined to blank the Dash down the stretch. Fernandes picked up the win with an inning and a third out of the pen, retiring all four batters he faced.

Anthony Carter pitched respectably for the Dash, throwing five innings and allowing three runs. Wander Perez yielded the solo blast in the eighth to Chiang, while Corley suffered the loss, surrendering the go-ahead hit to Hee in the 11th.

Up 2-0 in the best-of-five series, the Red Sox seek the sweep of the Dash back at home on Friday night. Seth Garrison pitches for the Salem while Winston counters with Jacob Rasner. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, with pregame coverage set to begin at 6:50.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Due to a conflict with High School Football Night, Friday's Salem Red Sox game will be heard exclusively at www.salemsox.com and www.milb.com.
