Deciding Game Three in Spinners Opening Round Postponed Due to Rain

Lowell Spinners News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - Inclement weather in Staten Island has forced the postponement of tonight's deciding Game 3 in the NYPL Semifinals between the Spinners and Yankees. The teams will be off tomorrow in observance of Sept. 11, with Game 3 moved to Saturday afternoon.
The weather, which arrived during the Spinners thrilling Game Two victory over the Yankees, is forecast to stay in the area throughout the weekend.
Traditionally the game would be pushed back just one day and be played Friday, Sept. 11, but Staten Island's ballpark, which looks directly across the Hudson River to the site where the World Trade Center once stood, will remain idle in observance of the anniversary of the tragic attacks.
With the observance day the Spinners and Yankees would meet for Game Three with rested bullpens Saturday evening. With the high intensity of the playoffs, both the Spinners and Yankees are running out of available bullpen arms.
Without the day off Staten Island would most likely have been without the services of power lefty Gavin Brooks, who was the winning pitcher in Tuesday's Game One and loser in Wednesday's Game Two, and closer Ryan Flannery, who has pitched three innings over the first two games of the series.
Lowell would most likely have been without closer Jordan Flasher, who pitched in both games for the Spinners, including his big time performance Wednesday night, striking out the side with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Wednesday's winning pitcher Doug Wogee would also most likely have been unavailable for the Spinners, who are already without regular closer Dennis Neuman who left the team to play in the IBAF Baseball World Cup last week.
The game will now be moved to Saturday evening with a 7 p.m. first pitch. All-Star starting pitcher Yeiper Castillo should get the nod for the Spinners, who will have a rested pitching staff in the do-or-die game.
