Chicago Bandits News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - A capacity crowd of 8,918 came to Alexian Field on Monday to see the Chicago Bandits top the Schaumburg Flyers 4-2 in the Battle of the Sexes. Played by official softball rules, the historic contest was covered by more than 20 different media outlets.
The Flyers struck first in the third inning when Tony Mansolino doubled home John Toussas and TJ Wilson to make it 2-0 Flyers. The Bandits would cut the Flyers lead in half in the fourth inning with Rachel Folden scoring on a Samantha Findlay bases-loaded walk.
Schaumburg brought in fast-pitch softball pitchers Andrew Blackshaw, Brian Tobin, and Jason Euli to throw. Blackshaw struck out six without allowing a hit through three innings of work, but the Bandits would get to Tobin and Euli in the fifth.
Trailing 2-1, Laura Harms led off the frame with a walk. Stacey May followed with a double, moving Harms to third. Folden then delivered a single to right field, scoring two and giving the Bandits their first lead of the night at 3-2. Folden would come around to score on a throwing error to make it 4-2.
Mansolino and Jose Valdez knocked back-to-back singles to start the sixth, but Bandits hurler Brandice Balschmiter retired the next three Flyers to escape the jam, and struck out the side in the seventh to seal the deal.
Mansolino and TJ Wilson both went 2-3 for the Flyers. The Bandits only mustered three hits, courtesy of May, Folden, and Ashley Carlson.
The Flyers return to Northern League action tomorrow evening with a doubleheader against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Game one begins at 5:15.
