Newark Bears News Release
A dramatic come from behind victory highlighted by Michael Sandoval's game winning RBI double in the ninth inning led the Newark Bears to defeat the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-4 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Trailing 4-0 after three innings, Sandy Madera put the bears on the board with a fourth inning homerun. The turning point came in the fifth inning when the Bears rallied for three runs to tie the game at four. With one run in, two men out and runners at second and third, Andres Perez' infield single scored Victory Mercedes from third and Charlton Jimerson never stopped running from second base to tie the score at four.
It remained that way as two new additions to the Bears bullpen combined to no-hit the hard-hitting Blue Crabs over the final five innings of play. Cuban born right-hander Alay Soler pitched for three shutout innings and Auburn University graduate Michael Nix struck out three in the eighth and the ninth to notch his second win of the season. That set the stage for ninth inning heroics as the Bears improved their record to 7-9.
The Bears will face the Blue Crabs on Sunday at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. There will be a special autograph session featuring legendary managers Tim "Rock" Raines and Butch Hobson prior to the game. Tickets are still available for the 1:05pm game by visiting www.newarkbears.com or by calling 1-888-85-BEARS.
