Blue Crabs RHP Kenny Baugh Signed By Houston Astros

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are proud to announce that the contract of right-handed starting pitcher and Houston native Kenny Baugh has been purchased by the Houston Astros. Baugh becomes the fifth Blue Crabs player this season to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization. First baseman Eric Crozier (Baltimore Orioles) and pitchers Matt DeSalvo (Tampa Bay Rays), Jim Ed Warden (New York Mets) and John Halama (Atlanta Braves) were the other Blue Crabs to depart for Major League organizations this year.

This season Baugh has harnessed his obvious talent, compiling a 6-2 record in his past eight starts. He departs Southern Maryland riding a season-high four-game winning streak.

Following a stellar collegiate career at Rice University in Houston during which he posted three consecutive seasons with an ERA under 2.28, Baugh was drafted in the first round (11th overall) by the Detroit Tigers in 2001. After steadily rising through the Tigers' farm system, Baugh reached the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens in 2005, where he recorded a 12-8 record with a 3.38 ERA.

After being traded by the Tigers to the San Diego Padres following the 2005 season, Baugh eventually signed with the Florida Marlins and pitched for the Albuquerque Isotopes, their Triple-A affiliate at the time, for all of 2007 and part of the 2008 season. Baugh quickly signed on with the Blue Crabs following his stint with the Marlins organization. In 14 games and one start with the Blue Crabs during their inaugural 2008 season, Baugh struck out 17 batters in 24.2 innings of work and posted a 2-1 record with a 2.92 ERA.

In what can only be described as fate, on Friday, June 26, 2009 the Blue Crabs donned "retro" uniforms, which were pattered after the "rainbow" design of the Houston Astros of the 1980s. With proceeds of a game worn jersey auction going to Hospice of Charles County, none other than Houston native Kenny Baugh took the mound that night and beat the Lancaster Barnstormers by tossing six solid innings to earn the win, in what would be his last start at Regency Furniture Stadium before signing with his hometown club.

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, and play at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland. Single-game tickets and mini-plans are currently on sale for the 2009 season. The Blue Crabs can also help your group fundraise at no risk or up-front cost, by helping you sell hundreds of tickets to exciting Atlantic League baseball.
