Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah (Friday, July 3, 2009) - As Americans honor the birth of their nation across this July 4th weekend, Real Salt Lake is proud to host a ceremony by the Remember My Service organization, which will make a presentation to members of the Utah National Guard during halftime of tonight's RSL-San Jose Earthquakes match at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Remember My Service (RMS) is a program created by StoryRock Electronic Publishing that helps Military units create an annual historical record and includes training, support, and a proprietary software application customized for the U.S. Military. Unlike a traditional historical record or a video slideshow, RMS is an interactive compilation of the events and experiences collectively shared by Service members within a unit. The completed RMS is placed on computer disc (CD-ROM or DVD-ROM) and can be distributed to each member of the unit, familiesâ and even within the community to increase awareness between the Military and civic organizations.
Thanks to a generous donation from Mountain America Credit Union, every one of the more than 6,500 Soldiers and Airman of the Utah National Guard will be presented with their historical record so that can share their legacy with family, friends, and future generations. Tonight's presentation of these historical and records by Remember My Service President and Utah native Sharlene Hawkes and Mountain America Credit Union CEO and President Sterling Nielsen to Utah National Guard Brigadier General Scott Harrison and Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year Staff Sergeant Dennis Boorman will replicate ceremonies taking place throughout the Beehive State this month. The Utah National Guard is the first unit across the Military to formally present and recognize each Service member in its Command in such a profound and meaningful way.
With current military members dealing with the highest rate of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) of any generation in American history, a doubling in the rate of alcoholism since 2003, and a higher suicide rate than casualty rate, these commemorative discs become an interactive tool that promotes discussion, thereby helping to relieve the pressures of war. The Remember My Service program will help Soldiers and their family members better deal with these issues because the tool promotes interaction. The discussions that arise out of reading about Soldier stories help combat these conditions in ways that are subtle, but highly significant.
The âRemember My Service' program is currently working on more than a dozen projects across the United States Military branches, with Ogden's Hill Air Force Base joining a list that includes the 100th Anniversary of the Army Reserve, the Active Army at Fort Hood, and the National Guards in Maryland, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. Along with the completed project for the Utah National Guard, Remember My Services has worked to create historical records for the Ohio and North Carolina National Guards as well as the 4th Fighter Squadron of the Air Force, the 419th Transportation Company, and the 96th Regional Readiness Command.
