San Jose Giants News Release
The Modesto Nuts snapped San Jose's season-high seven-game win streak with a 5-1 victory over the Giants on Monday night at John Thurman Field. Modesto starting pitcher Joey Williamson improved his record to 8-0 with five effective innings of work while the Nuts went ahead for good with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. The loss, San Jose's first of the second half (4-1), dropped the Giants' overall record to 46-29.
Williamson is now tied for first in the California League in wins after limiting San Jose to one run on two hits during his stint on the mound. Williamson walked two, struck out six and did not allow a hit until the top of the fifth inning. Ching-Lung Lo followed with 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief before Matt Reynolds recorded the last four outs to seal the Modesto victory.
The Giants mustered only five hits in the contest with their lone run coming in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Darren Ford lined a double into the left center field gap for San Jose's first hit of the evening. Tyler Graham then stepped to the plate and singled sharply into center field plating Ford with the tying run. On the play, Graham advanced into second base when center fielder Charlie Blackmon mishandled the ball for an error, however Williamson was able to limit the damage when he induced the next hitter, Brian Bocock, to pop out to first.
The Nuts quickly went back in front with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Facing San Jose starter Paul Oseguera, Michael Mitchell drew a one-out walk before Blackmon singled to put runners on first and third. Oseguera then uncorked a wild pitch to score Mitchell for a 2-1 Modesto lead. After Hector Gomez flied out to shallow right, Jay Cox worked a walk prompting a pitching change. T.J. Brewer was summoned from the bullpen, however he surrendered a double off the fence in deep right center field to Matt Repec scoring both Blackmon and Cox pushing the Nuts advantage to 4-1.
Oseguera (0-3) remained winless through four starts with the Giants after he was charged with four runs (all earned) on five hits over 4 2/3 innings. Oseguera walked three and struck out one.
Modesto added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning against Brewer when Mitchell delivered a two-out, RBI single to plate Radames Nazario, who had led off the frame with a single.
San Jose had baserunners in every inning except the first and the sixth, but were able to put more than one hitter on base in just the top of the fifth. Conor Gillaspie led off the seventh with a single, but Lo recovered to set down the next three batters to keep the Nuts lead at 5-1. In the eighth, Bocock reached on a one-out single before advancing to second on a wild pitch, but Thomas Neal lined out to third on a diving catch made by Nazario before Reynolds entered the contest and struck out Kieschnick. Then in the ninth, Trent Kline singled to third base with two outs, but Reynolds followed with a strikeout of Nick Noonan to end the game.
Modesto scored their first run of the night in the bottom of the third when Gomez reached on a two-out infield single before Cox smacked an RBI triple to deep right center field.
Notes: The Giants are still 17-4 in their last 21 games ... Williamson, in his third season of professional baseball, owns a career record of 17-0 ... Brewer (2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Craig Whitaker (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) both pitched out of the Giants bullpen ... The Nuts out-hit San Jose by a 9-5 margin.
On Deck: The Giants and Nuts play the rubber game of their three-game series on Tuesday night with first pitch at John Thurman Field scheduled for 7:05 PM. San Francisco Giant Joe Martinez (0-0, 3.00 ERA) is scheduled to make the start on the mound for San Jose as part of a rehabilitation assignment while Modesto is expected to counter with Ethan Hollingsworth (Cal League debut).
