ZEBULON, NC. (JUNE 15, 2009) - The Carolina Mudcats (36-28) beat the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (25-40) in a rain shortened five inning game, Monday afternoon, 2-0. A two-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning by Yonder Alonso, for Carolina provided all the offense they needed. The Mudcats take the series three games to two with the win on Monday. The Diamond Jaxx are now 4-8-1 on the season having played 13 total series.
The game was delayed for the first time in the top of the third inning for 55 minutes before resuming play. Justin Souza (4-6) picks up the tough luck loss, allowing just one earned run in four innings of work. Souza struck out four and walked none. Tom Cochran (1-0) got the win for Carolina going five scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and fanning five. The Jaxx are now 5-19 when facing left-handed starters.
The Mudcats wrap up the first half with Tennesee, trailing first place Huntsville by just two games. The Diamond Jaxx close out the first half of the season against the Montgomery Biscuits, beginning Wednesday at 7:05 at Pringles Park. The Jaxx will trot out RHP Steve Bray (1-3, 3.32) for the Wednesday tilt and the Biscuits will oppose with RHP Chris Mason (2-3, 7.16).
