CFL Retro: Fans Invited to Celebrate the Starts of the Sixties

Published on June 15, 2009 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

TORONTO -- CFL Retro is inviting fans to celebrate the great players from a golden era by selecting the Most Outstanding Player of the Sixties.

"When you visit CFL.ca or LCF.ca and vote for these legendary players from the 1960s, you celebrate them, you honour our heritage, and you earn the chance to win great Retro gear from Reebok," said Canadian Football League Commissioner Mark Cohon.

CFL teams have each nominated three players from the era. And, at a time when optimism about the league's return to the nation's capital is running high, three Ottawa Rough Riders were nominated by CFL Alumni in consultation with the league office.

And the nominees are...

British Columbia Lions

Norm Fieldgate, Willie Fleming, Tom Brown

Edmonton Eskimos

John LaGrone, Tommy Joe Coffey, Jim Thomas

Calgary Stampeders

Jerry Keeling , Wayne Harris, Herm Harrison

Saskatchewan Roughriders

Ron Lancaster, George Reed, Ed McQuarters

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Kenny Ploen, Leo Lewis, Gerry James

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hal Patterson, John Barrow, Garney Henley

Toronto Argonauts

Dick Shatto, Marv Luster, Bill Symons

Ottawa Rough Riders

Russ Jackson, Ron Stewart, Whit Tucker

Montreal Alouettes

Pierre Desjardins, George Dixon, Larry Fairholm

Fans can vote by visiting CFL.ca or LCF.ca. Voting will occur in three stages:

From now until July 9, fans can vote for the Most Outstanding Player from the Sixties on their favourite team, with the nine winners scheduled to be announced July 16th.

Fans will then have the opportunity to pick one legend from the East and one from the West in a divisional vote, with the two winners to be announced during the week of August 10th.

Finally, fans will be able to vote for the Most Outstanding Player of the Sixties from August 15th to September 8th, with the winner to be announced on September 11th, at the Retro Game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Toronto Argonauts in Toronto.

"While one name will emerge, our intention is really to highlight the accomplishments of all these gentlemen, who each added so much to the legacy and lore of the Canadian Football League," Cohon said.

"And just as this initiative is really about more than one player, CFL Retro is really about more than any single era. It's a celebration of great players, tremendous fans, and the unique bond between the two that has always existed in a league as affordable, accessible and authentic as ours is," he said.

"These are the things that define our history. These are the things on which we're building our future."

Fans can also register for the chance to win CFL Retro gear throughout the program.

Retro games, featuring teams in throwback 1960s jerseys designed by Reebok, will be played between July 16th, when the Edmonton Eskimos host the British Columbia Lions, and September 11th, with the Toronto Argonauts hosting the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
