June 1, 2009 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Toledo outfielder Don Kelly and Pawtucket pitcher Clay Buchholz have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from

May 25-31. Buchholz, who was previously named Player of the Week April 27-May 3, becomes the League's first repeat winner of 2009. Kelly is the first Toledo Mud Hen to be so honored this season.

DON KELLY, Toledo Mud Hens IL BATTER OF THE WEEK

Toledo's Don Kelly led the International League with 15 hits and a .556 batting average over the past seven days, giving him the IL's longest current hitting streak at 12 games. Kelly banged out three hits in three different games this week, adding two more two-hit affairs along the way. He was 2nd in the League with a .600 on-base percentage, and 5th with a .704 slugging percentage. Kelly was the only player in the IL to hit north of .500 for the week. He finished May with the League's 3rd-best average for the month (.365) and he now owns the 2nd-best average for the 2009 season (.356). He's also 2nd in the IL with a .427 on-base percentage.

29-year-old Don Kelly returned to the Detroit organization this year as a free agent. He previously played for Toledo in 2005 and 2006 (.237, 1 HR, 32 RBI in 109 games). In 2007 he played in 52 games for Indianapolis (.247, 0 HR, 11 RBI) and saw his only Major League action to date that year with the Pirates, hitting .148 in 25 games. He spent all of last season with Triple-A Tucson, hitting .275 with 8 HR and 55 RBI. Kelly is a native of Butler, Pennsylvania.

CLAY BUCHHOLZ, Pawtucket Red Sox IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Right-hander Clay Buchholz flirted with history this week, and in the process became the League's first repeat Player of the Week for 2009. On Memorial Day at Louisville, Buchholz came within three outs of recording just the fifth 9-inning perfect game in the 126-year history of the International League. Buchholz retired the first 24 Bats he faced, finally surrendering a hit to Danny Richar to lead off the 9th. He finished with a one-hit shutout, striking out 7 with no walks in one of the League's most dominant performances of the season. Saturday night at Indianapolis, Buchholz threw six more scoreless innings before finally allowing two runs in the 7th. The PawSox bullpen couldn't hold the lead, and the Indians ultimately prevailed 4-3 in 13 innings, but it was still a strong outing for Buchholz (6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K). For the week he led the IL with 15.2 innings pitched, and he now leads the International League with a 1.47 ERA on the year.

24-year-old Clay Buchholz was the 42nd overall pick of the 2005 draft by Boston out of Angelina (TX) Junior College where he was 12-1 with a 1.05 ERA. On September 1, 2007, Buchholz became just the second player in history to throw a no-hitter in his second Major League appearance. Buchholz is a native of Nederland, Texas.
