
JackHammers Stay Perfect in Spring with 6-3 Win over Flyers

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Joliet JackHammers amassed 11 hits en route to a 6-3 victory over the Schaumburg Flyers at ALEXIAN Field on Monday afternoon. Joliet improves it's exhibition record to 5-0 and will wrap up spring training season with a pair of games at the River City Rascals (O'Fallon, MO) of the Frontier League beginning Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Joliet opens up the 2009 season on Friday, May 15 at 7:05 p.m. against the Schaumburg Flyers at Silver Cross Field in Joliet City Center.
The JackHammers' offense exploded in the first inning. LF K.C. Herren reached base on a one-out walk and advanced to second base on a single by DH Joey Gomes. 1B Freddie Thon laced a two-run double to bring both Herren and Gomes across home plate for a 2-0 Joliet advantage.
The parade of hits continued in the second inning. Wally Backman, Jr. singled and stole second base. A groundout by SS Kevin Rios moved Backman, Jr. to third base for RF Mike Coles. The Hammond, IN native ripped an RBI single to make it a 3-0 advantage.
DH Joey Gomes led off the third inning with a solo home run. 3B Andrew Pinckney continued the show with a double into the outfield gap. He came around to score on a single by Backman, Jr. The Joliet lead ballooned to 5-0.
RHP Rory Shortell started the game for the JackHammers and tossed three scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out two men. RHP Grant Johnson worked the next three innings, yielding three runs on five hits. RHP Jason Novak, LHP Devin Anderson, and RHP Drew Shetrone worked one inning apiece to wrap up the win.
Joliet finishes the spring training schedule with a pair of games in O'Fallon, MO against the River City Rascals of the Frontier League. The brief two-game series begins Wednesday night and wraps up on Thursday morning. Pitchers for the series have not been announced.
