International League Names Players Of The Week
Published on May 11, 2009 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Louisville outfielder Drew Stubbs and Lehigh Valley pitcher Justin Lehr have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 4-10. Lehr becomes the League's first repeat winner in 2009, having previously received the honor the week of April 13-19, while Stubbs is the second Louisville player to be so honored this year, joining hurler Homer Bailey (April 20-26).
DREW STUBBS, Louisville Bats IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Bats center fielder Drew Stubbs combined hot hitting with aggressive base running to earn IL Batter of the Week honors. Stubbs hit .423 for the week (3rd in the IL) while leading the circuit with five doubles and six stolen bases in seven attempts. Monday against Rochester, Stubbs went hitless (for the only time all week) but walked twice and swiped two bags. He collected a hit in every game since, including multiple knocks in each of his last four contests. Two of his biggest hits came Saturday night as the Bats defeated the IL's winningest team, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 3-2. Stubbs doubled twice, the latter of which drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 7th. He added three more hits and another stolen base Sunday in a 3-0 victory over the Yankees. Stubbs now has ten steals on the season, good enough for 3rd in the IL.
24-year-old Drew Stubbs is ranked by Baseball America as the 3rd-best prospect in the Cincinnati farm system. The Reds selected Stubbs in the 1st round (8th overall pick) of the 2006 draft out of the University of Texas. He first reached Triple-A in late 2008, hitting .293 with 2 HR, 10 RBI, and 3 SB in 19 games for the Bats last season. Stubbs is a native of Texarkana, TX.

JUSTIN LEHR, Lehigh Valley IronPigs IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Right hander Justin Lehr is the International League's first five-game winner this season, earning two more victories in as many tries this week. Lehr tossed a 7.0-inning shutout Tuesday against Buffalo in Game 1 of a doubleheader, limiting the Bisons to just three hits and two walks while striking out four. It was just the second shutout in the IL so far this season (Homer Bailey, Louisville; May 2 at Buffalo). Lehr's fifth win came yesterday at Toledo. He pitched 6.1 solid innings as the IronPigs went on to win 5-3. It was the fourth "quality start" in six outings for Lehr, who owns more than 1/3 of Lehigh Valley's 14 victories.
31-year-old Justin Lehr was signed by the Phillies as a free agent last December. The ten-year veteran of professional baseball has 66 games of experience pitching in the Major Leagues, all coming with Oakland and Milwaukee between 2004 and 2006. He pitched in 43 Triple-A games over the last two seasons with Tacoma and Louisville, posting a 13-3 record with a 3.33 ERA. Lehr is a native of Orange, California.
