Texas League Update

Published on April 28, 2009 under Texas League (TL1) News Release

Player of the Week, April 20-26, 2009

Steven Hill, Springfield

.571 AVG (12-for-21) 4 home runs, 9 RBI, 8 runs, 3 doubles, .609 OBP, 1.286 SLG

Springfield Cardinals catcher Steven Hill had a week to remember, helping his team to a 6-0 record and nearly sweeping every major offensive category during the past week. For his effort, he was an easy selection for Texas League Player of the Week.

Hill, a native of Nacogdoches, Texas, was not the Cardinals' opening day starter at catcher and had to scrap his way to get at bats in the first few days of the season. He got spot starts at DH and in left field, and even pinch-ran in one game. Making the most of those opportunities, Hill quickly climbed from sixth to fourth in the batting order and has been bashing Texas League pitching ever since.

Listed at 5-11, 190 pounds, Hill was the St. Louis Cardinals'13th round selection in the 2007 after hitting 24 home runs with a .486 on base percentage at Stephen F. Austin University. He spent 72 games in the minors later that summer, clubbing 32 extra-base hits and 55 RBI as a first baseman/outfielder, but did not replicate those numbers in 2008 in three minor league stops.

Still just 24 years of age, Hill is blossoming into one of the most productive hitters in all of minor league baseball in his second full minor league season. Currently, with 56 plate appearances, he is batting .440 with 10 extra base hits, 15 RBI and an OPS (on base plus slugging) of 1.331. The middle-of-the-order punch provided by Hill and teammate Brett Wallace has also helped Springfield to a Texas League-best 11-5 record.

Pitcher of the Week, April 20-26, 2009

Kasey Kiker, Frisco

1 start, 0.00 ERA 7.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 7 K

In a week full of solid performances, Kasey Kiker stands out despite not receiving a decision in his one appearance. On April 21, Kiker completed seven strong innings against Arkansas, allowing just one hit, a two-out single in the sixth. He threw 91 pitches (59 strikes, 32 balls) and struck out seven Travelers.

The 12th overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft, Kiker has a world of potential but is still developing as a pitcher. The 5-11 lefthander turned 21 during the offseason, making him one of the youngest pitchers in the Texas League, but it remains to be seen how he will handle success. After being drafted out of Russell County High School in Seale, Ala., Kiker went 0-7 in 15 starts for Spokane of Northwest League in 2006. He followed that up with a productive 2007 in the Midwest League, going 7-4 in 20 starts with 112 strikeouts in 96 1/3 innings pitched. He suffered through shoulder soreness that hampered his progress in the California League 2008, which precipitated a fall from No. 7 to No. 19 on Baseball America's Rangers top prospect list.

Now fully healthy, the Rangers are hoping Kiker can get back on track to being one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. Two 2006 high school draftees have already made the Majors (No. 7 Clayton Kershaw and No. 14 Travis Snider) but the Rangers don't figure to rush Kiker. With a big 2009 campaign in Frisco, he may be able to change their plans.

Dallas answered with eight runs in their half of the inning, getting within six runs of the lead. However, Dallas could neither prevent further scoring by the Spudders, nor mount another serious threat of their own the rest of the way. Wichita Falls collected a total of 25 hits, with all ten of the men they sent to the plate getting at least one hit and scoring at least once. Only second baseman Al White, who was 2-for-5 and scored three times, failed to drive in a run for the winners. In the Spudders 10-run inning, Arch Tanner, Art Weis and Pete Turgeon all had two hits.
