Orange County Flyers Sign Major League All-Star Robert Fick

Fullerton, CA. April 8, 2009 - The Orange County Flyers of the independent professional Golden Baseball League (GBL) have announced that they have agreed to terms with former American League All-Star 1B/OF Robert Fick. The 10-year major league veteran was an all-star with the Detroit Tigers in 2002 and played in over 100 games for the Washington Natonals in 2007 before being released last season by the San Diego Padres..

Fick, 35, 6-1, 190, was drafted in the 5th round out of Cal State Northridge in the 1996 amateur draft by the Detroit Tigers. He rocketed throught their farm system, making his major league debut just two years later at the end of the 1998 season as a catcher. Playing at first base and in the outfield as well for the next three years he was the Tigers starting rightfielder in 2002 as he slugged 17 home runs, hit for a .270 average, and knocked out 36 doubles during his all-star season. Leaving for the Atlanta Braves the following season he played there and then with San Diego, Tampa Bay, and the Washington Nationals over the next five years. He was released late in spring training in 2008 by the Padres.

Of the more than 60 ex-major leaguers to play in the GBL, Fick will be the MLB All-Star along with Rickey Henderson, Jose Canseco, Felix Jose, and Jose Lima.
