Quentin Townsend, owner of the American Basketball Association's Atlanta Vision and the suspended Chief Operating Officer of the ABA, has been arrested on charges of contempt of court. He was taken into custody on Tuesday in Gwinnett County. The charges are related to a pending criminal case against him in Forsyth County.Townsend has admitted guilt in the settlement of a civil case brought against him by Jayhawk Sports, LLC, which claimed Townsend defrauded Jayhawk members Carter Patterson and Brian Richey, his former partners in the Vision, of $200,000 in a scheme to purportedly lure an NBA D-League franchise to Atlanta, despite being rebuffed by the D-League. In the settlement, Townsend agreed to pay $300,000 in damages to Jayhawk Sports.
Criminal charges were filed against Townsend shortly thereafter, leading to his arrest in November. He had been free since posting bond. According to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Townsend faces up to three years in prison on the criminal charges.
It is not known at this time if Townsend has been released on bond. ABA CEO Joe Newman declined comment at this time.
Another source indicated other charges may be forthcoming against Townsend in Gwinnett County.
