President Bush Appoints Riley To Fitness Council

SAN ANTONIO - President George W. Bush has appointed Ruth Riley to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the White House announced yesterday.

Riley, a center for the San Antonio Silver Stars, owns the rare trifecta of an NCAA National Championship, a WNBA Championship and an Olympic Gold Medal. She took home the NCAA title with Notre Dame in 2001, earning Most Outstanding Player honors for her efforts. In 2003 Riley was MVP of the WNBA Finals as Detroit took home the title. The following year, she helped USA to Olympic Gold in Athens, before winning a second WNBA title with Detroit in 2005.

The Indiana native also is active in the community and serves as a spokesperson for Nothing But Nets, an organization dedicated to providing bed nets for children in Africa where Malaria is a leading killer. Riley has made multiple humanitarian trips to Africa, distributing bed nets, teaching basketball clinics and educating children and parents about health.

Joining Riley on the council are David Josserand, Kirk Bauer, Steven Bornstein, Susan Dell, Allyson Felix, Susan Finn, Diego Gutierrez, James Holsinger, Michelle Kwan, Bobby Labonte, Edward Laskowski, Eli Manning, David Marsh, Leslie Miles, Omar Minaya, Richard Phelps and Jason Sehorn.

The council members' terms expire May 3, 2010.
