Toronto, ON - (September 26, 2008) - The Montreal Alouettes can take a giant step this weekend towards playing in the 96th Grey Cup game in their own backyard on November 23, 2008.
An Alouette victory over Saskatchewan on Sunday afternoon, combined with losses by both the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, would clinch first place in the East Division for the Alouettes.
That would secure the Als, under coach-of-the-year candidate Marc Trestman, a bye through the first week of the Grey Cup Playoffs and the right to host the East Final on Saturday, November 15 at 1:00 p.m. ET at Olympic Stadium, site of the Grey Cup game a week later.
An Alouette victory over Saskatchewan on Sunday afternoon, combined with a loss by either the Toronto Argonauts or Winnipeg Blue Bombers, would clinch second place in the East Division for the Alouettes.
That would secure the Als, at the very least, the right to host the East Semi-Final on Saturday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
The last team to play in the Grey Cup in the same year that it hosted it was the Edmonton Eskimos in 2002. The Eskimos lost to the Montreal Alouettes 25-16 at Commonwealth Stadium.
The last team to win the Grey Cup on their home field was the 1994 BC Lions when they defeated the Baltimore Stallions 26-23 on a game-winning field goal by Lui Passaglia.
The Alouettes play host to the Roughriders this Sunday at 1:00pm ET on TSN and RDS.
