Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings brought the curtain up on their 2008-2009 Western Hockey League season Friday night with a come from behind 5-3 victory over the visiting Regina Pats at Westman Communications Group Place.
Brayden Schenn's shorthanded goal with 3:36 remaining in the third period was the difference as the Wheat Kings won their Home Opener for the thirteenth time in the past 15 years.
After trading goals in the first period, the Pats grabbed a 2-1 second period lead when Scott Doucet redirected a centering pass from Jordan Weal past Brandon netminder Joe Caligiuri.
The third period, however, belonged to the Wheat Kings, who scored four goals - the shorthanded winner, a powerplay goal by Jay Fehr, Andrew Clark's second of the game and Matt Lowry, who closed out the scoring with an empty netter.
