Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi IceRays General Manager Pat Dunn and Head Coach Sylvain Cloutier announced today the signings of a pair of players who have both put up outstanding numbers in their short careers thus far. Inking contracts for the upcoming season are forward Mike Zbriger and defenseman Jeremy Leroux.
Zbriger, 26, has been a terrific scorer in his brief pro career that has spanned 129 games. Last year, the Montreal native played in Europe for the Weiden Blue Devils (Germany) where he scored 30 goals with 34 assists in 52 games played. His previous professional experience came in the United Hockey League (UHL) with Bloomington, Chicago and Flint. His most productive season came with Bloomington (2006-07) where he played 44 games and totaled 38 points (17-21=38).
"Mike is a great addition for us," said Cloutier. "He is a pure goal scorer that will be a big boost for our offense. Mike grew up with Justin Quenneville in Montreal so the two of them should have great chemistry both on and off the ice."
The 5-10, 178-pound center played his college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. With the Saints, Zbriger scored 23 goals with 20 assists in 95 career games (2002-06).
Leroux, 25, played his rookie season last year with Port Huron of the International Hockey League (IHL). In 67 games with the Icehawks, Leroux scored eight goals with 14 assists and notched a goal and an assist in 11 playoff games. The Lunenburg, Ontario native played his college hockey at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts where he scored 16 goals with 49 assists in 124 games (2003-07).
"Jeremy is a very good skater and very creative offensively," said Cloutier. "His ability and decision making with the puck will be a big plus for our power play."
The two recent signings bring the total number of players under contract for Corpus Christi to 14 including Chris Richards, Mike Campaner, Bryce Luker, Ryan Bennett, John McNabb, Justin Quenneville, Chris Shaffer, Adam Powell, Jeff Grant, Chris Mei, T. J. Reynolds and Kris Tebbs.
The IceRays open their 11th season on October 18th at home versus the Tulsa Oilers with face-off scheduled for 7:05 PM (CST) in the American Bank Center. Call (361) 814-PUCK (7825) for ticket information or sponsorship opportunities.
