Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - Newark Bears starter Jose Garcia outdueled Abe Alvarez as the Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks 2-1 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Garcia (9-4) pitched eight innings and allowed one run on four hits, and struck out six en route to his ninth victory of the season. Alvarez (6-2) did his part but suffered the loss, allowing two runs on six hits through eight innings, and until Bears scored in the eighth, Alvarez had retired eleven consecutive batters. Neither starter allowed a walk during the game. Ed Almonte recorded the final two outs of the game to earn his fourth save of the season.
The teams exchanged solo home runs early in the game, creating a 1-1 tie that lasted through the seventh inning. Robert Sandora originally put the Ducks on top with his solo shot in the top of the third. Ramon Castro then tied the game in the fourth with his seventeenth home run of the season.
Vic Gutierrerz broke the tie in the eighth inning with an RBI single to plate Ramon Nivar, creating the final score. Gutierrez finished the game 2-3 with two singles.
The Bears next return to Lancaster for a three-game series against the Barnstormers before returning back to the Den next weekend. The Bears play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, conveniently located off Route 280, across the street from the Newark-Broad St. train station, and minutes from Route 78 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
