Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ - Seven outstanding innings by starter Matt Smith were not enough as the Newark Bears fell to the Long Island Ducks 7-2 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Thursday night.

Making just his second start for the team, Smith pitched seven innings and gave up just one run on four hits, left the game with a 2-1 lead, but earned a no-decision in the loss. Smith's only run came in the third inning to make the score 1-0. With one out, P.J. Rose hit an RBI double to plate Nook Logan and give the Ducks the advantage.

Doing his part, Ducks starter Alay Soler held the Bears scoreless until the fifth inning, when Randall Simon blasted a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. Soler also earned a no-decision, lasting five innings and giving up six hits and one run.

With the Bears leading 2-1 in the top of the eighth, however, the Ducks offense broke open, scoring five runs to take a 6-2 lead. Carl Everett and Ray Navarrete got the inning started with back-to-back solo shots, respectively their 24th and 22nd home runs on the season. After holding the Bears in the bottom of the eighth, the Ducks scored once more in the ninth.

Bears reliever Cory Willey (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season, giving up all five runs in the eighth inning. Ben Grezlovski (5-2) pitched a scoreless final three innings to pick up the win for the Ducks.

Simon and Will Otanez were the Bears' big hitters, both going 3-4. Simon hit his sixth homer of the season, as well as two singles, while Otanez recorded two singles and a double.

The Bears continue their weekend series against the Ducks tomorrow with a 7:05 contest. Mike Bumstead (13-6) will be looking to set the Bears' record for single-season wins, as he squares off against the Ducks' Randy Leek (9-2). The Bears play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, conveniently located off Route 280, across the street from the Newark-Broad St. train station, and minutes from Route 78 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
