Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

HIDALGO, TEXAS --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced a trade that sends center Jason Weitzel (WHITE-zul) to the Amarillo Gorillas in exchange for forward Brian Bicek (BYE-sek).

A second-year pro hailing from Downers Grove, Illinois, Bicek played four seasons of college hockey at Western Michigan University, where Killer Bees Head Coach Chris Brooks was Associate Coach. He tallied 53 points and collected 110 penalty minutes over 145 games with the Broncos. Eight of the 22-year-old's 29 goals came while on the power play.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder finished last season playing in seven games for the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL after completing his college eligibility. He had a goal and one assist for the Jackals.

"Brian is a kid who can really skate," Brooks said. "He was another priority for me to bring here. He does a lot of little things well, brings the values I look for in a player and just has a lot of the intangibles you want. He works hard and loves the game."

Weitzel was a late-season addition for the Bees, appearing in 18 games and collecting 12 points (5-7-12) and 37 PIM. He also spent time with Mississippi and Oklahoma City and played four games in Germany.

The Bees open their sixth season at Dodge Arena on October 18 vs. the Rocky Mountain Rage. Season tickets are available now by calling 956-843-PUCK (7825).
