Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Schaumburg, IL - A robust afternoon crowd of 6,880 fans showed up on Wednesday to see the Schaumburg Flyers take on the Kansas City T-Bones at Alexian Field. The home team's offense was just strong enough to keep them in the game, but not strong enough to put them over the top for a win. Kansas City won game two of the three-game series by a final score of 4-3 with the help of three unearned runs.
The first Kansas City (36-37) run came via an error in the top of the first inning. T-Bones CF Aharon Eggleston (2-for-4, 3 R) led off the game with a double into left field, and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt by 2B Bo Hart (1-for-3). That made it a sacrifice fly situation for RF Greg Jacobs (1-for-5), who lifted a ball high but to shallow left field. Flyers left-fielder Jermaine Allensworth (2-for-3, RBI, 2 BB) ran in to catch it, but on an underhand attempt it hit off the heel of his glove and fell safely to the ground. It was only the fifth error on Allensworth all season, but it gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
Yet another unearned run came across for Kansas City in the second frame. After Flyers starter Justin Jordan (1-2) allowed two singles to start the inning, catcher Hank Lanto (2-for-4, RBI) turned a sacrifice bunt into a fielder's choice with a great pounce and throw to third in time on a force play. Later in the inning, however, Lanto allowed a passed ball that put men on second and third with one out, and T-Bones C John Martin (0-for-3, RBI) sent a sacrifice fly to right to score his man at third and make it 2-0. Since the inning ended with no other hits, the passed ball caused the run that scored on the fly ball to be unearned.
Meanwhile, Kansas City starter Kenny Durost (6-4) held Schaumburg (27-46) in check at the plate. Durost allowed only two hits through his first six innings of work against the Flyers, and he got extra run support in the fifth inning on an RBI single by DH Craig Hurba (2-for-5, 2 RBI). With a 3-0 lead, Durost seemed poised to cruise through the rest of the contest.
The Flyers put an end to those dreams in the home half of the seventh. Hank Lanto smoked a single off of Durost's leg to reach base, and SS Mark Haske (1-for-5) sent a safety into left-center to put men on first and second with one out. After a strikeout by 2B Julius Thames (0-for-5), Allensworth came through in the clutch with a single that scored Lanto to make it 3-1.
Schaumburg got more of the same in the eighth inning when a one-out walk to 1B Peanut Williams (1-for-2, Run) got things started. RF Lance Koenig (1-for-4) extended the frame with a two-out single to put men on the corners, and Lanto came up big on a single that just got through the right side of the infield. Williams scored from third to make the score 3-2, and give the Flyers some forward momentum.
Whatever momentum the home team had was lost when the T-Bones scored their third unearned run of the game. A one-out walk to Aharon Eggleston from Flyers reliever David Byard looked most harmless after Bo Hart popped out to put two men down. Byard got the pop up he wanted on the infield from Greg Jacobs . . . but miscommunication at the pitcher's mound caused Peanut Williams to drop the ball. With men on the corners and new life, Craig Hurba singled to drive in his second run of the game. Although Jermaine Allensworth reached on a walk in the bottom of the ninth, no Flyer could hit a home run to tie the game, giving David Trahan (SV 17) the save.
Now a rubber match awaits Schaumburg for the second straight series. The Flyers are scheduled to go with RHP Steve Shippey (4-6, 7.44) on the mound to start, while Kansas City plans to counter with RHP Chris Rhoads (2-4, 6.02). Game time is 7:05 p.m. on Thirsty Thursday at Alexian Field, so come out to the ballpark yourself or listen to it all on flyersbaseball.com.
