Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Schaumburg, IL - It might have been Independence Day Eve, but every one of the 8,191 fans at Alexian Field came in a festive holiday mood for baseball on Thursday night. It was as American as apple pie - the sun was shining and the home team hit a home run. The storybook ending to the day never emerged for the Schaumburg Flyers, however, as they fell to the Joliet JackHammers by a final score of 10-3.

Schaumburg (16-29) struck first to get the home fans excited. Flyers CF Kurt Crowell (1-for-4, Run) doubled with two outs to get things going in the bottom of the second inning. After a walk to 1B Chris Gaskin (1-for-3) behind Crowell, RF Dan Maycock (1-for-4, RBI) sent a hard grounder through the left side to drive in Crowell and make it 1-0 Flyers.

Joliet (23-21) struck right back in the next half-inning. The top of the third saw JackHammers SS Nick McIntyre (3-for-6, RBI) hit a single to lead off the frame against Flyers starter Brian Finch (0-2). After a throwing error on a double play attempt sent McIntyre to second base, 1B Freddie Thon (1-for-5, RBI) drove his shortstop in to tie the game at one apiece. The visitors would not relent in the next two innings, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth to make it a 3-1 JackHammer advantage.

It stayed that way until Joliet recorded two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. That situation brought up Flyers 2B Bo Hart (2-for-4, 2 RBI), and he gave the home fans a reason to cheer. Hart sent one high, deep, and over the wall in left field to drive in the runner on second base and himself, and tied the game at 3-3. It was his third long ball of the season, and it brought his team some momentum.

JackHammer hitters wiped out that momentum for good in the top of the sixth. RBI singles by LF Doc Brooks (3-for-6, RBI) and DH Joey Gomes (1-for-3, RBI) made it 5-3 in favor of Joliet, and in the bottom half of the inning JackHammer starter David Moraga (6-1) earned two strikeouts to bring his total to four for the game. The closes the Flyers came to another run past that point came after 3B Vince Harrison's (2-for-4) single with two men on in the seventh, but LF Jermaine Allensworth (1-for-5) couldn't score ahead of a throw from center field. For the final two innings, JackHammer reliever Tyler Meigs (SV 5) came on for his second two-inning save of the series.

Independence Day proper will be spent in Kansas City for the Schaumburg Flyers, as they square off against the Kansas City T-Bones for three games this weekend. The Flyers will send LHP Brad Mumma (4-3, 4.10) to the mound - the same Brad Mumma that threw a complete-game five-hit shutout in KC earlier this year. The T-Bones will put RHP Anthony Boughner (3-3, 5.15) on the hill. First pitch from CommunityAmerica Ballpark comes in at 7:05 p.m., and you can hear it all on flyersbaseball.com.

The Schaumburg Flyers are a member of the Northern League, a 6-team Independent Professional Baseball League established in 1993. Opening Day is May 15th, 2008. For ticket information call (847) 891-BALL (2255) or visit www.flyersbaseball.com
