International League Player Of The Week

Published on June 30, 2008 under International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Lehigh Valley first baseman Andy Tracy and Pawtucket pitcher Devern Hansack have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from June 23-29. Tracy becomes the first member in the history of the Lehigh Valley club to win an IL weekly award, while Hansack is now the fourth Pawtucket player in the last five weeks to be so honored.

ANDY TRACY, Lehigh Valley IronPigs IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Andy Tracy led the International League with 13 hits, 10 runs, and a .625 on-base percentage this week, earning him the honor of becoming the first IronPig ever named IL Player of the Week. Tracy was also at or near the top of the League in several other offensive categories. He was tied for 1st in extra-base hits (6) and doubles (4), while he finished 2nd in batting average (.520) and slugging percentage (.920). His hot bat this week increased Tracy's average on the season to .314, the third-best mark in the International League. His .413 on-base percentage is best in the IL. Tracy hit safely in all seven games this week, including five multi-hit performances (and four in a row to end the week). He homered twice and drove in six runs, giving him a club best 13 HR and 50 RBI on the year. Tracy helped spark the IronPigs to a 5-2 week, including their first-ever road series victory, which came in Durham.

34-year-old Andy Tracy signed with the Phillies as a free agent this past November. He is a veteran of 443 games in the International League dating back to 2000 with Ottawa, Norfolk, and now Lehigh Valley. He has also played 136 Major League contests with the Expos and Rockies. Tracy is a native of Bowling Green, OH.

DEVERN HANSACK, Pawtucket Red Sox IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Pawtucket right-hander Devern Hansack entered the week with a 2-8 record and 5.40 ERA, but in consecutive starts against Richmond and Rochester he was flat out dominant. Hansack turned in a pair of two-hit gems, totaling 15.0 innings and striking out 12 batters without surrendering a run or a walk. Hansack's 8.0 inning victory Tuesday night against Richmond was his longest outing of the year by a full inning, and just the second time he allowed less than three hits. He followed that with a 7.0 inning, eight-strikeout performance yesterday in Rochester, exacting revenge after losing to the Red Wings back on May 23 (5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER). His eight strikeouts matched a season high, helping the PawSox increase their lead in the IL North to 5.0 games. His two victories this week represented the first two times he didn't allow a walk this season.

29-year-old Devern Hansack is in his third season with the Red Sox, coming after a two-year absence from professional baseball in which he worked as a lobsterman. Last season he went 10-7 for Pawtucket with a 3.61 ERA, and earned IL Pitcher of the Week honors June 18-24. Hansack is a native of Pearl Lagoon, Nicaragua.
