Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - Fans got a sense in the first inning Sunday that it would be the kind of game where anything can happen. The first three JetHawks batters all reached base and Jon Still brought them all in with a grand slam. That was just the beginning as eight of the nine JetHawks knocked a hit and scored, and seven of the JetHawks drove in a run as Lancaster salvaged a series split by defeating first-place Inland Empire 16-9. The 16 runs matches the most production from the JetHawks this season.
Still's grand slam was just the first stage of a record-tying day for the Lancaster designated hitter. The slugger added a single in the third inning, a RBI double in the fifth, and a RBI walk in the eighth. His six RBI matched a career-high, as did his four runs scored.
Lancaster has now struck four grand slams this month. It is just the second time in franchise history they've reached that total in a single month. The other occurred in July of 2008 and included a grand slam by Matt Williams, then on a rehab assignment from the Diamondbacks.
Pitchers on both sides struggled throughout. The 66ers had tied the game 6-6 in the fifth inning, only to see the JetHawks jump out for four more. The inning was sparked by a solo home run by Reid Engel. The 66ers scored three more times in the seventh to make it a one run game, but Lancaster had their biggest inning in the bottom half of the frame. They put up five more runs to pull away.
Derrick Loop made his Lancaster debuted and earned the win in relief of Blake Maxwell. Maxwell started in place of Adam Mills. Mills became the fifth JetHawks player this season to be promoted to AA Portland.
The JetHawks open a four-game road trip Monday evening against High Desert. Chris Province (1-2) starts for Lancaster while the Mavericks counter with Travis Mortimore (0-0). The game starts at 7:05 PM. The radio broadcast on Magic 1340 AM and online at www.JetHawks.com kicks off the coverage at 6:50.
Individual game tickets for all JetHawks home games, including playoff games, are available in person at the JetHawks Box Office Monday - Friday from 10 AM - 5 PM or Saturdays from 10 AM - 3 PM. Great ticket packages for multiple games are also available starting at just $56 for eight games. More information can be found on-line at www.JetHawks.com.
