Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Joliet, IL - Some nights, you just have to tip your cap to the other guy. That's exactly what the Schaumburg Flyers had to do on Tuesday night at Silver Cross Field, as the Joliet JackHammers won with an excellent pitching performance by Nate Sevier. The right-hander's complete-game four-hit shutout stopped Flyers hitters in their tracks, and led the home team to a 2-0 victory.
Schaumburg's (14-23) first hit didn't even come until the third inning. That's when 1B Chris Gaskin (1-for-3) lined a ball into left field for a leadoff double to get the Flyers cooking . . . or so they thought. Joliet's Sevier (2-2) put on a display of accuracy for the rest of the inning, striking out the next three Flyers batters looking to end the threat and the inning. Through three innings, the JackHammer starter had six strikeouts - just three short of his season high - and five of them were against batters caught looking.
All the runs Joliet (18-18) would need in the game came on a solo home run by 1B Freddie Thon (2-for-4, RBI) in the bottom of the fourth. Thon took a first pitch from Flyers starter Dan Frega (2-3) over the right-field wall to make the score 1-0. Frega didn't pitch too poorly himself, allowing only the lone run on the homer, five hits, and two walks to Joliet. The Schaumburg hurler also struck out two men in his five innings of work, but Sevier would eventually make that performance pale in comparison to his own. By game's end, the Joliet starter retired 11 Flyers on strikes, and walked nobody to boot.
The visitors tried to mount comebacks in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings with hits. Specifically, LF Jermaine Allensworth's (1-for-4) two-out double in the top of the ninth put the tying run at the plate. But on a night where Nate Sevier was nearly too good to be true, he got CF Victor Burgos (0-for-1) to ground out weakly to end the game. When it was over, the Joliet starter had earned his fifth career complete game, and his fourth shutout.
The Flyers will be glad to see a new Joliet hurler at Silver Cross Field tomorrow night. Schaumburg RHP Steve Shippey (1-4, 8.17) will look to earn the win for the Flyers, and Joliet LHP Brian Forystek (2-3, 4.76) will be the JackHammer starting pitcher. The action is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. in Joliet, and if you can't make it out to the ballpark you can always tune in on flyersbaseball.com.
