Hitter of the Week

MAT GAMEL, 3B, HUNTSVILLE STARS

Gamel extended the Southern League's longest hitting streak of the season to 13 games thanks to a torrid week at the plate. The 22-year-old Gamel led the league with a .517 average, 15 hits and a .931 slugging percentage and tied for the top spot with nine RBI. In four games against Jacksonville, the city in which he was born, Gamel went 11-for-17 (.647) with five extra-base hits and seven RBI. Capped by a two-run homer and two triples in a game suspended in the ninth inning on Sunday, Gamel reached base in six straight plate appearances before the week drew to a close. Gamel has batted .436 (24-for-55) during his hitting streak to raise his overall average to .362, good for fourth in the league. In 14 games at Joe Davis Stadium, Gamel has hit .434 with each of his three homers and 15 of his 18 RBI.

Pitcher of the Week

SAM NARRON, LHP, HUNTSVILLE STARS

Narron came within four outs of pitching the Southern League's first nine-inning perfect game since 1970 on Wednesday. In the finale of a five-game series at Mississippi, the 26-year-old Narron retired the first 23 batters before surrendering a triple to Diory Hernandez. He gave up another hit and a run thereafter before settling for his third career complete game in a 9-1 victory, which began a four-game winning streak for the Stars. A native of Goldsboro, NC, the 6-7 Narron nearly became the first Southern Leaguer to pitch a perfect game of any kind since Orlando's Chad Gaudin worked a seven-inning gem in his Double-A debut at Jacksonville on July 15, 2003.
