Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
CLEARWATER, F.L. (April 9, 2008) - Thanks to a five-run second inning and a season-high 13 hits, the Fort Myers Miracle were able to pick up their second straight win over the Clearwater Threshers by a final score of 9-3 on Wednesday night. Johnny Woodard and Juan Portes led the way offensively for the Miracle each picking up three hits at Bright House Field.
Scoring happened early and often for the Miracle as Allan de San Miguel lifted a sacrifice fly to left in the second, plating Whit Robbins for a 1-0 lead. The five-run second occurred after two outs were on the board, beginning with Portes' RBI-single to center. Danny Santiestiban followed with a two-run single to right giving the good guys a 4-0 advantage.
A bases-loaded fielding error by Thresher shortstop Fidel Hernandez would plate the final two runs of the frame. After a lead-off triple by Rene Tosoni and a run-scoring single by Woodard in the fourth, Clearwater would take advantage of two Miracle miscues of their own to score a pair of runs cutting the Thresher deficit to three.
A pair of lead-off walks in the eighth would lead to the final two runs as Tosoni and Valencia came around on Woodard and Portes' back-to-back RBI-singles. The Miracle bullpen would look strong in the late innings again Wednesday night as Jose Lugo tossed two innings, allowing a walk, hit and struck out one. Anthony Slama finished with a couple of innings worked, a walk and three strikeouts. Jeff Manship secured his second win of the season working the first five frames, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while fanning four.
The Miracle will look for the series sweep on Thursday night by sending RHP Deolis Guerra (0-0, 1.80) to the hill. The Threshers counter with RHP Carlos Monasterios (1-0, 2.84) at Bright House Field. Thursday's 7 p.m. contest can be heard on 1440am WMYR and 1660am WCNZ beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45p.m.
