Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Former Stampede star Jim McKenzie signed a two-year contract with the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League Tuesday afternoon. McKenzie, 23, was Ottawa's first fifth-round draft pick (141st overall) in the 2004 entry draft. Last year, McKenzie helped lead the Michigan State Spartans to a national championship while setting career highs in goals (12), assists (18), and points (30). In all, McKenzie spent three seasons with the Spartans, recording 76 points (34g, 42a) in 112 career games.
The Senators are coming off one of their best seasons in franchise history in which they upset the top seeded Buffalo Sabres in six games and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history.
Big Mac played two seasons (2002-04) with the Stampede, posting 87 points (32g, 55a) in 104 career games. He ranks second all-time in total penalty minutes with 276. He finished second on the team in scoring during the 2003-04 season when he posted 63 points (26g, 37a) in 59 games.
The Stampede currently have over 20 former players playing professional hockey. Should McKenzie make the Senators NHL roster, he would become the third former player to play in the National Hockey League.
