Oil Can Boyd's Traveling All Stars Play in Nashua on May 17

May 7, 2007 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release

(Nashua, NH) Boston Red Sox legends Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd and Bill "Spaceman" Lee will join forces with other former Major League baseball stars on Thursday, May 17 at 5:30 PM to take on the Nashua Pride in an exhibition doubleheader at Historic Holman Stadium. "Oil Can" Boyd's Traveling All-Stars will be making a stop in Nashua to promote the heritage of the great Negro League style of baseball and the tradition of barnstorming.

"Oil Can" Boyd's Traveling All-Stars is striving to serve as an inspiration to young African-American baseball players as the number of African-American players in Major League baseball continues to decline. Today just five percent off all big leaguers are African-American. In helping to preserve the tradition of the Negro Leagues, "Oil Can" Boyd's Traveling All-Stars are working to prevent the extinction of the African-American player as well as the African-American baseball fan.

Joining Boyd and Lee for the event are former Major League standouts Marquis Grissom (Expos, Braves, Indians, Brewers, Dodgers and Giants), Delino DeShields (Expos, Dodgers, Cardinals, Orioles and Cubs, Derek Bell (Blue Jays, Astros, Mets and Pirates), Sam Horn (Red Sox, Orioles and Indians) and Ken Ryan (Red Sox and Phillies). Both Horn and Ryan were key members of the Nashua Pride in 2000 when the Pride captured the Atlantic League championship.

Boyd won 60 games for the Red Sox between 1983-89 while Lee posted 94 victories for Boston from 1969-1978 and then had 25 additional wins for the Montreal Expos from 1979-1981. Grissom played 17 Major League season with 227 home runs and a lifetime average of .272. DeShields spent 13 years in the big leagues with 463 stolen bases and a career average of .268. Bell batted .276 with 134 homers in 11 big league campaigns.

In addition to the doubleheader, all members of "Oil Can" Boyd's Traveling All Stars will be available for free autographs.

Tickets are just $10 and are on sale at Historic Holman Stadium. Nashua Pride season ticket holders will be admitted free to the exhibition twin bill between the Pride and "Oil Can" Boyd's Traveling All Stars. For more information contact the Pride at (603) 883-2255.

The Nashua Pride Professional Baseball Club, entering its tenth anniversary season, provides a fun, affordable, community-based and fan-friendly source of sports entertainment. The Pride is participating in its second year of play in the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball. Only season ticket holders can guarantee seats for the club's home opener.
