Alabama Steeldogs News Release

Birmingham, Ala. - The Alabama Steeldogs traded quarterback Robert Kent to the Lubbock Renegades on Sunday, in exchange for Lubbock starting quarterback Justin Midgett.

Steeldogs Head Coach Ron Selesky said the trade solidifies rookie quarterback Mitch Tanney as the Steeldogs' new starter.

"He's our starter now," Selesky said. "He's got a great opportunity to progress and accomplish the things that we need from him at the QB position."

Tanney played well for the Steeldogs in the team's 63-47 victory over the Louisville Fire on Saturday after replacing Kent at the end of the first half. The rookie QB completed 13-of-16 passes for 130 yards and five touchdowns. He has completed 20-of-26 passes for 205 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions this season.

Selesky said the change under center was necessary in order to help the team improve and achieve its goals for this season.

Kent completed 44-of-88 passes in three games for the Steeldogs this season for 462 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 65 yards and three touchdowns.

Selesky said that he decided to make the trade for Midgett after talking with Lubbock Head Coach Rodney Blackshear.

"I talked with their coach and he indicated that they were looking to make a change at QB as well," Selesky said. "Justin is a highly-touted recruit out of Florida and I feel like he will do well in our system."

Midgett, who has started all three games for the Renegades this season, has thrown for 680 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

He is in his second af2 season after spending 2006 with the Florida Firecats. Midgett was recruited by former University of Florida Head Coach Ron Zook and was touted as one of the top ten high school quarterbacks in the nation by Rivals.com in 2002.

Selesky said he is confident that the quarterback change will make the Steeldogs a better team.

"We have a lot of games left this year," Selesky said. "We'll be playing better teams but I think we're going to be a lot better as well."
