Borba, Bryant And Walker Earn Week Two Honors
April 10, 2007 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Central Valley wide receiver/linebacker WES BORBA, South Georgia quarterback D. BRYANT and Bossier-Shreveport wide receiver/defensive back KENDRICK WALKER have been named the U.S. Army Ironman, Schutt Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 2 of the 2007 season. In addition to these three awards, the af2 is also highlighting the player who makes the best catch of the week. The Cutters Catch of the Week Award for Week 2 goes to Amarillo wide receiver STEVE BERGESKI.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Borba (6-3, 215, St. Mary's College), in his fourth af2 season, was an impact player on both sides of the ball in the Coyotes' convincing, 74-31, season-opening home win against the Everett Hawks. Borba not only caught a touchdown pass and rushed for a touchdown, but also threw a touchdown pass as well, accomplishing a rare triple in football. His totals on the night included two rushes for 11 yards (5-yard TD run), five receptions for 31 yards (5-yard TD catch), and completed his only pass attempt to WR Jason Barnes for a 3-yard TD. Defensively, Borba was also a factor, recording 1.5 tackles and one fumble recovery. This is the first weekly af2 award of Borba's career.
SCHUTT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bryant (6-3, 210, Duke) helped lead South Georgia to an impressive, 77-53, Week 2 home win against Louisville. The veteran signal caller, now in his fourth af2 season, was hotter than the Fire, completing 17-of-22 passes for 271 yards and an af2 season-high nine touchdowns with no interceptions. This is the second time Bryant has been named Offensive Player of the Week in his af2 career. His first award came in 2005 (Week 10) as a member of the Albany Conquest. Bryant is currently tied for the league lead in touchdown passes with 13 and is also among the af2 leaders in passer rating, passing yards and completion percentage.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Walker (5-8, 175, Abilene Christian), a two-year af2 veteran, was a major player on defense in Week 2 for Bossier-Shreveport as the Battle Wings won their home opener, 67-52, against the expansion Fort Wayne Fusion. Walker had 5.0 total tackles (all solo) and an af2 season-high three interceptions (30 INT return yards). His stellar defensive effort also included three pass breakups. Walker's one-man show didn't end there, however. He showed the Fusion why he is appropriately nicknamed "Boss" with a 51-yard missed field goal return for a touchdown in the third quarter. This is the first weekly af2 award of Walker's career.
CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK
Amarillo wide receiver Steven Bergeski (6-2, 200, Central Connecticut), who is in his rookie season in the af2, is the Week 2 recipient of the Cutters Catch of the Week Award, a weekly honor that emerged last year to highlight the player who makes the best catch of the week. Bergeski's catch was a diving 21-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter of the Dusters' impressive, 61-26, home opening win against Lubbock. Bergeski finished the night with eight catches for 117 yards and three touchdowns (all game-highs) in the first af2 game of his career.
