ULB season ends Wednesday, Playoffs set to begin Saturday

The United League Baseball's first place Edinburg Coyotes will face the Laredo Broncos, while the San Angelo Colts will play the Alexandria Aces in the opening round of the league playoffs, set for Saturday.

The regular season ends Wednesday.

The Coyotes will play the first game on their opponents' turf, with the second and third game, if needed, will be played at Edinburg Stadium.

The Broncos won the right to make the playoffs by defeating the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in both ends of a doubleheader, 11-7 and 5-4 on Monday and Tuesday. The second game lasted until after midnight.

The first game between the Colts and Aces will be at Alexandria, if the Colts hold onto second place, with the second game and third game, if necessary, to be at San Angelo.

However, should the third-place Aces pass San Angelo - and it's a tight race - the first game would be played at San Angelo./

The winning two clubs will open the title playoff series beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The club with the best record will play at the home of the team with the worst record on Aug. 30 and 31.

With a day off for travel on Sept. 1, the team with the worst record will play at the home of the club with the best record on Sept. 2, 3 and, if necessary, 4 and 5.

In other news, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings on Sunday named second baseman Antoin Gray their Most Valuable Player for the 2006 inaugural season.

Gray, who had been named the club's MVP for the month of June, as of this writing, leads the league in home runs, with 20, in RBIs, 76, and in slugging percentage, .586. He is third in extra base hits, 42; and second in runs scored, 75.
