New Mexico Scorpions News Release

RIO RANCHO, NM---The New Mexico Scorpions, who will resume play in the Central Hockey League (CHL) this October in the new, state-of-the-art Rio Rancho Events Center, today unveiled a newly redesigned logo, color scheme and uniforms at a press conference held at the newest Chili's Grill & Bar, 1001 Unser Blvd SE, Rio Rancho.

"This is an exiting time for both our franchise and hockey fans throughout the Rio Rancho and Albuquerque areas," said former NHLer and team co-owner/president Dave Ellett. "We are really, really thrilled about the look we have developed and the identity that this will allow us to establish with everyone from our players to our season ticket holders and our corporate partners alike. This logo is something we can all be really proud of.

"Putting a fresh face on this franchise was something we as a group felt was important for us to do when we bought the team back in January," added Ellett. "From ownership, to our staff, to our coaches and players - and of course, to where we will play - everything about the Scorpions is new. We felt it important to carry that theme throughout the organization and that meant putting a new spin on the old look and making it our own."

The Scorpions new color scheme features AV red (PMS #1911), red (PMS #485), gold (PMS #123), tan (PMS #1172), black and white.

The new Scorpions logo features an animated, yet angry looking tan-colored scorpion snapping a hockey stick with its pinchers. Surrounding the scorpion in a half moon shape are the words "New Mexico" in white text, inside a black band while the name "Scorpions" appears below the character in black, block text outlined in white. The scorpion itself is accentuated on a field of deep, maroon-like red.

The new Scorpions logo was crafted by Mike Tungate, graphic artist with Graphic Connection Custom Sports Apparel, 4901-A Paseo del Norte NE, Albuquerque. "We were looking for a more fan-friendly design," said Tungate. "We collaborated with ownership and came up with several ideas. Through the process, we knew we wanted a more aggressive scorpion and a more unique look for the players (uniforms)."

Said Graphic Connection President, Scott Creagan, "We think we've scored a hat trick with this logo. It's one that will appeal to adults and kids alike and should be a hot seller with sports fans everywhere. It's a great look and we're all really proud of the design."

As for the teams new uniforms, the team chose to shy away from the more detailed and sometimes busy designs that have come to take the ice over the last decade and return the Scorpions to a more simple, yet sleek look.

"I think you can sum up our uniforms with one word - classic," said Ellett. "That's the type of uniforms that most people identify with. When you look at the NHL for example, Toronto, Detroit, Montreal, and Chicago, all of them unique and come to mind as soon as you hear the name. And all of them are classic looks. Some may say simple, but I prefer traditional."

The team's home jersey is base white and features a tri-color striping pattern on the waist and sleeves of yellow (two outer stripes), black (two inner stripes) and red (one center stripe. The home jersey features a black neckline with a classic lace-up collar.

Road jerseys are base red with a tri-color striping pattern on the waist and sleeves of yellow (two outer stripes), white (two inner stripes) and black (one center stripe). Like the home jersey, the road counterpart features a black neckline and lace-up collar.
