Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, CA: The Fullerton Flyers announced today that former major league pitcher Charlie Hough will become their Pitching Coach for the 2006 Golden Baseball League season. Hough joins the Flyers after coaching stints in the minor leagues, as well as with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets in the Major Leagues.
Hough pitched from 1970 - 1980 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, from 1980 - 1990 with the Texas Rangers, and then moved to the Chicago White Sox, before finishing his 25 year Major League Career with the expansion Florida Marlins. In 1993, he was the Marlins' first ever winning pitcher in the team's history. The right handed knuckleballer won 216 games at the Major League level, had a career 3.75 ERA, pitched in one all-star game, and three World Series.
"It will be great to have Charlie teaching our pitchers this season," said Garry Templeton, Manager of the Fullerton Flyers. "I only got three singles off the guy total in my career so I can't wait to turn him loose on our pitching staff. It's an honor to have him as a member of the team and a terrific opportunity for development for our pitchers."
As a professional coach, Hough handled the pitchers of minor league clubs for four years and then in the major leagues for the Dodgers in 1998/1999 and the Mets in 2001/02. He was also the pitching coach for the 2001 National League All-Star team under manager Bobby Valentine.
In 2003, Hough was inducted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame, along with Nolan Ryan, Johnny Oates, and Jim Sundberg.
"We are thrilled to have Charlie on board as our Pitching Coach," stated Flyers General Manager Ed Hart. "His playing and coaching resume speaks for itself, and his knowledge of the game, of how to pitch in every situation, and his ability to teach young pitchers will be a tremendous value to our organization and will be a treat for our fans."
Between Hough and Templeton, their major league careers included 5 All-Star games, four different World Series, and 20 major league titles in various statistical categories. The Flyers coaching staff now has over 40 years of MLB playing experience, and seventeen years of professional coaching and managing experience.
"I am excited about working with the players at this level, and being so close to home at the same time," said Hough, who resides less than 5 miles away from the Flyer's home stadium at Cal State Fullerton. "Working with Garry will be a treat, as well. He was a great player, and has an excellent baseball mind. We will teach these young men what it means to be a professional baseball player, and how to excel at the next level. My wife, Sharon, and I attended several Flyers games in 2005, and we are both very excited to be a part of this fine organization."
