Boris Becker withdraws from World TeamTennis events
July 13, 2005 - World TeamTennis (WTT) News Release
July 13, 2005 -- Boris Becker, a three-time Wimbledon champion who is the marquee player for the Hartford FoxForce, was slated to play Sunday, July 17th, against the Sacramento Capitals. However, he has withdrawn from the event due to a knee injury.
A replacement player has not yet been named, according to World TeamTennis spokesman David Egdes and Sacramento Capitals management.
In an e-mail on July 12th, Becker's agent Peter Henke cited Becker's knee surgery in May and that the six-time Grand Slam champion was expected to have a full recovery by the start of the World TeamTennis season. While Becker has improved, he is physically not in a position to go "full speed" as anticipated for the WTT League. Henke said that Becker offered his regrets for not being able to play with his teammates in three other markets: one home match at Hartford; and two away at New York (Sportimes) and Houston (Wranglers).
Sunday, July 17th, is "Retro Night" where the Capitals will welcome back Nicole Vaidisova, the 16-year-old phenom who played Fed Cup for the Czech Republic this past week. She is currently No. 27 in the world but will surely be a Top 10 player. This could possibly be her last year as a roster player, so come out to Allstate Stadium and have a blast watching her!
