Bluefish Announce March 19 for Individual Game Ticket Sales

With our Opening Day against the Long Island Ducks only 59 days away, you may want to know when our single game tickets will go on sale. The answer: in only nineteen days on Saturday morning, March 19 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. We'll provide you with more information as the date approaches, but you might want to mark it in your calendar right now. After that first four-game home set against the league champion Ducks, we return home the very next weekend May 6-8 to face the brand new Lancaster Barnstormers, followed by a three-game series May10-12 against our Northern Division arch-rival, the Nashua Pride. One of those games, on Wednesday, May 11, is a 10:35 AM morning tilt where the ballpark will be filled with school kids form the entire region. It's not too early to go online to our website (www.bridgeportbluefish.com) to access our entire schedule and begin marking down the games you want to attend. You'll also find our promotional schedule there for all the very special nights we have planned for you at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

When the Newark Bears signed Elvis Corcoran earlier this winter, the team issued a press release, which said, "Elvis Will be in the Den in 2005." Cute. Not to be outdone, we could have juiced up our release when we signed Brady Williams. "The Brady Bunch Comes to Harbor Yard this Summer." Can't you hear the theme song already as Brady approaches the plate: "It's the story of a man named Brady, who was busy with three boys of his own...?" Of course, we know that many of our fans are a little too old to remember the Brady Bunch, but then there are the rest of us... By the way, Brady's dad is Jimy Williams, the 1999 American league Manager of the Year while with the Boston Red Sox. We misspelled Jimy's name in last week's newsletter.

Mary Capello of our staff wants everyone to know that the National Anthem auditions have been moved to Sunday, April 3 instead of Saturday, April 2. Location is the same: Stamford Town Center – Grand Court, 100 Greyrock Place, Stamford; 12:30 – 1 p.m. check-in; 1 – 4 p.m. auditions.

Besides the photo of the park, there is also a great article on the excellent progress to date in getting the park built. This editor visited the site for the ballpark last August when there was only a large clearing next to a bunch of all brick buildings on the edge of downtown Lancaster. Expect to see a completely transformed area this spring when the Barnstormers take the field! May the Pennsylvania Road Warriors rest in peace.

By the way, Sparky Lyle was in Harrisburg last week and was interviewed by Lancaster's Sunday News. As you might imagine, the only manager left form the Atlantic league's inaugural 1998 season, the Somerset Patriot's Lyle had many good things to say about the Atlantic League. "I think at this point in time, the Atlantic League... would be on the caliber of an AAA team... especially... from the aspect of pitching. Don't let the word ‘independent' fool you. We are the best independent league in the country." Sparky was chosen as the Atlantic League's Manager of the Year in 1999 and 2004. Editor's note: Sparky certainly deserved that award in 2004 when the Patriots became the first repeat champion of the Atlantic League. But 1999? That was the year the Bridgeport Bluefish won everything, including a 3-0 sweep of the Championship finals against Lyle and the Patriots. Our own Willie Upshaw had won Manager of the Year in 1998, and there may have been a desire to spread the award around, but here in Bridgeport, we feel Willie should have won it again in 1999. C'est la vie!

Speaking of the Patriots, did you read the article in Saturday's Connecticut Post about the documentary film entitled "Sister Rose's Passion"? Toward the end of the article, you may have noticed that the film was produced by Steve Kalafer, "owner of a family of car dealerships in Annandale (NJ)". We know Steve better, of course, as the owner of the Somerset Patriots and congratulate him on this seminal work. The documentary is a true story about a nun from Plain, Wisconsin, who could not accept what she had been taught growing up that Jews were responsible for the killing of Jesus. Her determination to change the Roman Catholic's teachings on this matter led to the Vatican issuing a declaration in 1965 that "what happened in His passion cannot be4 charged against all the Jews, without distinction, then alive, nor against the Jews today." Sister Rose's Passion was good enough to be nominated for an Academy Award, and even though it was not a winner last evening, you will not want to miss it when it airs on Cinemax this May.

Red Sox fans may want to know that the new Can-Am League team that will be playing its games at the College of Holy Cross, the undergraduate Jesuit liberal arts college in Worcester, MA, has named Rich Gedman as its inaugural manager. Gedman is a former Major League Baseball catcher and left-handed batter who played with the Boston Red Sox (1980-90), Houston Astros (1990-91) and St. Louis Cardinals (1991-92). Gedman is often referred to as the pride of Worcester, MA, and one of the best catchers in Red Sox history.

Earlier this month this editor was privileged to be the keynote speaker at a "Graduation Celebration Dinner" for the Fall Class of 2004 of the Workshop in Business Opportunities. This program is a product of FSW and is run by the Rev. Kevin D. Ginyard, Sr. who, parenthetically, is a huge Bridgeport Bluefish fan, as is his wife and family. Let me just say that this is an extraordinary program right here in Bridgeport, a local jewel that has actually been quietly turning out local entrepreneurs for the past four years. Trying to find a great summer camp for your kids? The Bluefish baseball camps at our ballpark are enormously popular since we use our professional ballplayers, and the kids get to play right on the best playing surface in all of Connecticut. Check out our website for details. And if your kids aren't into baseball, how about the theater world? There are great summer camps offered through ARTSport, our sister organization that operates The Klein and the Playhouse on the Green Theaters. For instance, the Broadway Bound program if for children 10-16 years of age, and runs from June 27 through July 29. Now in its third season, this summer theatre workshop offers an intensive introduction to the performing arts. The five-week session includes classes in acting, singing and dance and culminates in a staged showcase of scenes, songs and production numbers from a variety of plays & musicals. Everybody works!
