Yuma Scorpions CF Gathright Acquired by Boston Red Sox
August 31, 2011 - North American League (NAmL) News Release
(Yuma, AZ) The Yuma Scorpions are proud to announce that the Boston Red Sox have purchased the contract of center fielder Joey Gathright. The speedy outfielder will report to Triple-A Pawtucket. Gathright, 30, hit .347 and drove in 21 runs after joining the Scorpions on June 10th. Gathright immediately became a force at the top of the Yuma lineup and his ability to get on base was apparent as he finished the season with 40 walks and only 24 strikeouts. Once on base, Gathright used his blazing speed to steal 20 bases and score 47 runs on the season.
Joey Gathright joined the Scorpions after playing for the Triple-A Norfolk Tide in the Baltimore Orioles' organization last season. He has extensive Major League experience, having played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs. The Mississippi native owns a career MLB batting average of .263 and has 80 stolen bases in the Majors.
Gathright becomes the 15th player acquired by a Major League organization out of the North American League this season. The NAL is quickly establishing itself as a reliable source of MLB-caliber talent as scouts from several MLB organizations have taken note of the high level of play and talented players in the league. Gathright is the third Yuma Scorpion to be acquired by a Major League club this season after the Oakland Athletics acquired RHP JJ Leaper and the Red Sox acquired LHP Robby Scott earlier this season.
