ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Minnesota Thunder announced today the signing of defensive midfielder Freddy Juarez to his third season with the Thunder. The Thunder has also signed young forward Tyrone Gordon after his impressive showing at the combine in February.
Juarez will enter his third season with the Thunder. Last season Juarez logged over 1,800 minutes in 23 games adding one goal on the season. In 2004, Juarez saw 1,797 minutes in a season where he helped anchor a defense that only allowed in 23 goals all year.
"Freddy has proved himself as one of the best two-way midfielders in the league," said Thunder head coach Amos Magee. "He is a player that I desperately wanted back and with the addition of Dustin Branan in the back, I feel our defense is going to be tough to penetrate."
Before coming over to the Thunder, Juarez played six seasons with the El Paso Patriots where he was named defender of the year for the team in 2002 and 2003. Juarez is a community leader in his hometown of Las Cruces, N.M. where he is a youth soccer coach and owns his own soccer store.
Gordon stormed onto the field during the Thunder's 2005 combine in February catching the eye of Magee from the very beginning.
"Minnesota fans are going to get a lot of excitement out of this young forward," said Magee. "He's explosive, dynamic, fast, and dominated a pro combine at the age of 20."
Gordon was born in Milwaukee, Wis. and played youth soccer with the Milwaukee Simba SC from 1993-2004. During his senior year at Milwaukee Vincent high school, Gordon set the record for most goals scored in a single Milwaukee public schools game by scoring 10 goals against Milwaukee Washington.
The Thunder will kick off its season at home on April 23 at 3:05 p.m. at James Griffin Stadium in St. Paul. The game has been coined a charity event and NO admission will be charged. Fans are instead encouraged to donate money to United Way and Thunder P.L.U.S. A portion of all proceeds will go to these two non-profits.
The home-opener will be preceded by a youth clinic with Thunder and Lightning players that will start at 1 p.m. for kids ages 3-18.
