Showdown for the lead
With just about one quarter of the first XSL season remaining, nobody's out of the race, but Milwaukee and Detroit have the advantage.
Those teams face off twice in six days, starting Sunday in Milwaukee. Detroit hosts the return engagement Friday.
The Ignition lead the season series 3-2, having taken a 14-12 overtime decision in Milwaukee back on Jan. 10. Milwaukee has dropped eight consecutive games in Detroit by an average of almost 5 points per game.
It's Elfvin magic
Jeff Richey's injury-driven exit from the Chicago net could have been disastrous for the Storm, who have been fighting injuries to try and climb back in the race.
But veteran keeper Bayard Elfvin, who had been training with the team, stepped in and not only beat Milwaukee 19-10 last Sunday, he added a pair of assists.
Elfvin has now been with five teams in five seasons, always as a backup but always solid. He's big (6-1, 195) and made a handful of acrobatic saves against the Wave.
Handicapping the MVP race
The league's leading scorer has failed to win the MVP only twice this decade, and each time it was the No. 2 scorer. Right now, New Jersey's Lucio Gonzaga (44 points) and Adauto Neto (35) are the top 2 scorers, but their team is in last place.
No goalkeeper has won the award since Victor Nogueira in 1998, but Detroit's Danny Waltman has to be considered a candidate, not so much for his stats but the saves he makes that keep his team in any game.
The MVP and other leaguewide awards will be chosen in postseason voting.
