XSL Weekly Update
February 4, 2009 - Xtreme Soccer League (XSL) News Release
Rookie of the Year Makes a Move
Chicago's struggles this season can be directly traced to the Storm's inability to score; a 4-2 loss to Milwaukee last week left them averaging just 6.3 points per game, more than 3 points per game behind the rest of the league.
They hope a trade last week helps them lift the cover off the goal. Reigning Rookie of the Year Frederico Moojen went to Chicago in exchange for rookie Randi Patterson. Moojen has been slowed by a toe injury this season and had just nine points. Patterson, a prolific scorer in college and last summer in USL-1, had just two points on a pair of assists.
Players of the Month
Award winners for the second month of XSL play are:
OFFENSE - Lucio Gonzaga, New Jersey. Racked up 28 points in six games, including an 18-point weekend against Chicago and Milwaukee.
DEFENSE - Troy Dusosky, Milwaukee. Scored 11 points and blocked seven shots as the Wave stayed near the top of the standings.
GOALKEEPER - Danny Waltman, Detroit. Stopped an amazing 80.8 percent of the shots he faced and went 4-0 in January.
Starting fast ... or slow
The Wave go to Detroit on Sunday in an attempt to snap the Ignition's 14-game home winning streak and take over first place in the standings.
The first quarter could go a long way to determining the outcome. The Ignition have a 24-7 first-quarter advantage in seven games; the Wave have been outscored 18-12. In Detroit on Jan. 18, the Ignition ran out to a 6-0 lead and cruised, 24-14.
Milwaukee is 1-7 all-time at Compuware Arena, including playoffs, and has lost seven in a row there.
