Kalamazoo Xplosion
The Kalamazoo Xplosion unveiled the name of their team mascot tonight at a public event which was held at Old Burdick's Bar and Grill in downtown Kalamazoo. After accepting hundreds submissions over the last few weeks, the name was finally announced. His name is Xplodey the Coyote.
"There were about 300 entries and ironically, we only had one Xplodey," said team owner Mike Johnson. "We wanted something that the kids could say and something that was friendly. There were other entries like TNT and Dynamite, which were good, but we just thought that Xplodey was unique."
The winning name was submitted by retired General Motors employee, Norm Minshall of Portage. He and his wife, Jan, will receive two season tickets for the upcoming season. Norm is a huge football fan and is really looking forward to seeing the Xplosion in action at Wings Stadium.
Some of the Xplosion players were also on hand to participate in a hamburger eating contest. Teams consisting of two players each had eight minutes to down a huge burger and a side of fries. The winning players were Little John Flowers and Dwight White. The prize was a $300 catering party from Old Burdick's. The other team was made up of Kyle Lackscheide and Mick Fassan.
The team now turns its attention to the start of the regular season, which begins on Saturday night, March 24 with a road game against the Marion Mayhem.
